چکیده

It has recently been argued by Polchinski and Strassler [1] that hard parton effects in wide angle scattering can be understood in terms of strings in a deformed AdS background dual to QCD. On the other hand, an equally valid approach to the String/Gauge duality for 4-d QCD is based on M-theory in a specific black hole deformation of AdS × S. Here we show that a very natural extensions of these ideas to M-theory also gives the correct hard scattering power laws. In the Regge limit we extend the analysis to show the co-existence of both the hard BFKL Pomeron and the soft Pomeron Regge pole. ∗HET–1311: This work was supported in part by the Department of Energy under Contracts No. DE-FG0291ER40676 and No. DE-FG02-91ER40688

A review of measurements of αs is given, representing the status of April 2004. The results prove the energy dependence of αs and are in excellent agreement with the expectations of Quantum Chromodynamics, QCD. Evolving all results to the rest energy of the Z boson, the world average of αs(MZ0) is determined from measurements which are based on QCD calculations in complete NNLO perturbation the...

Average multiplicities and transverse momenta in AA collisons at high energies are studied in the soft and hard regions, in fusing string and perturbative QCD scenarios respectively. Striking similarities are found between the predictions of the two approaches. Multiplicities per string and average p 2 T are found to, respectively, drop and rise with A in a very similar manner, so that their pr...

We argue that the process of the proton diffraction into three jets in proton-nucleus scattering at LHC will allow to investigate the light-cone wave function of protons, generalized gluon densities in nuclei at small x, as well as the interplay of the color transparency and opacity phenomena.

Results on soft and hard diffraction are briefly reviewed and placed in a QCD perspective using a parton model approach. Issues addressed include factorization, scaling properties, universality of rapidity gap formation, and unitarity. Predictions for differential cross sections of processes with multiple rapidity gaps are presented with examples for the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider. ...
